Global trade is on edge. Between Donald Trump’s return to office, punitive tariffs, the weakened state of the World Trade Organization and increasingly fragmented supply chains, the world seems to be heading into a new wave of protectionism. Against a backdrop of uncertainty, Canadian businesses need to decide where to direct their focus. Can Europe, a long-time partner, be a strategic anchor in these stormy seas?

The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA, originally promised to usher in an age of shared prosperity. In the current context, however, the headwinds facing Canadian exports are strong and persistent, with tougher U.S. policies, trade retaliation and mounting pressure on key industries. What then remains of free trade? Is it something we can still bank on?

This edition of Rendez-vous ED x IIDE will provide much-needed insights into the current state of trans-Atlantic trade with a panel of distinguished experts who will endeavour to unravel the prevailing power dynamics, compare differing economic visions and identify tangible ways forward for today’s leaders.

Our experts:

  • Pierre Marc Johnson, Adjunct Professor, Department of International Business, HEC Montréal, and former Premier of Quebec
  • Henri-Paul Rousseau, Quebec Delegate-General in Paris, Adjunct Professor at HEC Montréal’s Retirement and Savings Institute, and former President and CEO of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec
  • Daniel Labrecque, Chairman and CEO, DNA Capital
  • Véronique Tougas, President, Cambli Group
  • Olivier Marcil, Vice-President, Public Affairs, Alstom
  • Mélanie Raymond, Acting Chief Economist and Director General of International Economic Relations, Global Affairs Canada
  • Marie-Ève Jean, Vice-President, Exports, Investissement Québec – Moderator
  • Philippe Bourbeau, Professor and Co-Director, International Institute of Economic Diplomacy, HEC Montréal

This event is a must for all those who want to be one step ahead of the game, rather than being left behind.

This is an invitation-only function. Attendance is restricted to those on the invitation list and cannot be transferred. You are encouraged to confirm your registration immediately, as space is limited.

Be part of a strategic conversation with top specialists, policymakers and economic leaders on how Europe and Canada can join forces to navigate the choppy waters of international trade.

This will be an opportunity to:

  • Understand where and how the future of free trade will be decided
  • Measure the actual scope of CETA
  • Identify concrete strategies to protect and reposition Canadian businesses in a time of instability.
