Pierre Marc Johnson is both a lawyer and a physician. He was a Member of the National Assembly and served in various ministerial roles from 1976 to 1985 before becoming the 24th Premier of Quebec. After leaving politics, he joined McGill University’s Centre for Medicine, Ethics and Law as a professor and senior researcher. He subsequently worked as legal counsel at the firms of Guy & Gilbert, Heenan Blaikie and Lavery in Montreal.
During the course of his career, he has been a member of the boards and advisory committees of more than 30 limited or publicly listed companies in Quebec, Canada, the U.S., Mexico and France. He has also authored numerous publications on various aspects of globalization and sustainable development.
On more than one occasion, he has played the key role of chief negotiator and advisor for the Government of Quebec, notably in the softwood lumber dispute with the U.S. government, and in the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement negotiations between Canada and the European Union. Additionally, he served as committee chair and advisor for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Grand Officer of the Ordre de la Pléiade and a Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec. He is also an Advocatus Emeritus of the Barreau du Québec and holds honorary doctorates from the Université de Montréal and two universities in Lyon, France.
