On April 24, the second annual Perspectives conference brought together members of the legal community for a day of learning and networking. The conference theme focused on changes in the legal profession and the role of managers in achieving success against this backdrop. A lineup of experts was on hand to walk participants through the challenges and opportunities arising from these changes.

Helping legal organizations prosper
Caroline Blache, Chair of the CAIJ Board of Directors started by emphasizing the central role played by legal managers in navigating this landscape of change. This set the stage for some in-depth discussions and an exploration of the best ways to deal with change and create value through compliance and the integration of artificial intelligence into day-to-day operations.
Through conversations about the culture of development and knowledge transfer, and best practices in cultivating a dynamic learning environment, participants delved into several of the issues that will have a decisive impact on the growth and prosperity of legal organizations going forward.
Future-proofing skills
What are the skills that need to be developed to keep professionals relevant in the ever-transforming legal sector? Ability, adaptability and leadership are at the top of the list, according to the HEC Montréal specialists who weighed in on the question, namely:
- Céline Bareil, Professor, Department of Management, HEC Montréal
- Stéphane Rousseau, Professor, Faculty of Law, Université de Montréal; Affiliated Professor, Department of Finance, HEC Montréal
- Jean-François Bertholet, Lecturer, HEC Montréal, and a writer for Gestion magazine as well as an organizational development consultant
- Alexandre Rousseau, Lecturer, Department of Management, HEC Montréal; and a business consultant.
Meeting a real need
Through Perspectives 2024, CAIJ and Executive Education HEC Montréal provided legal professionals with a unique opportunity to hone their management skills so they can be better prepared to face the multiple challenges ahead — which is precisely what many of the participants said they hoped to take away from the experience. The organizers plan to build further on this success in future editions of the conference.
